Gas Pump Won’t Start
What to check when a fuel dispenser does not begin a transaction after you insert or tap a payment method.
Steps to try
Make sure the dispenser is the one you selected. If you are at a station with multiple islands, confirm the pump number shown on the terminal matches the dispenser you are using.
Read the screen. Look for messages such as INSERT CARD, SELECT FUEL, SEE ATTENDANT, PAYMENT DECLINED, or a maintenance message.
If the reader did not register your card, remove it and try the station’s other supported payment method. If contactless was attempted, try inserting the card instead.
Select a fuel grade only after the terminal asks you to. Some dispensers will not activate the nozzle until payment authorization and fuel selection are completed.
If the pump still does nothing, ask the attendant to reset or inspect the dispenser. Do not open the pump cabinet or manipulate the dispenser wiring.
If your card was charged or shows a pending transaction even though fueling never started, keep the receipt or screen message and check the temporary hold guide before contacting your bank.
When to get help
Contact station staff when the dispenser or kiosk is not operating normally, when a transaction needs to be found or corrected, or when the issue involves station-owned equipment. Contact your bank or card issuer for authorization decisions and account-specific payment problems. For EV charging, use the operator support channel shown on the charger. For immediate danger, follow emergency instructions rather than troubleshooting the equipment yourself.
