Fuel Pump Stops While Filling

Why an automatic nozzle may repeatedly click off and what you can safely try.

Safety check: Never hold a nozzle open with an object, tape, wire, or other workaround. The automatic shutoff is a safety feature.

Steps to try

1

Slow down the fuel flow slightly. Automatic nozzles can shut off when fuel reaches the sensing area or when the tank neck causes splashback.

2

Make sure the nozzle is fully seated in the vehicle’s filler neck according to the vehicle manufacturer’s normal fueling instructions.

3

If the station nozzle has a flow-position latch, use only the normal setting provided by the equipment. Do not wedge or defeat the nozzle’s automatic shutoff.

4

Pause briefly and restart fueling at a lower flow rate if the nozzle keeps clicking off.

5

If the issue happens repeatedly, try a different dispenser or ask station staff to inspect the nozzle.

6

If the same vehicle behaves unusually at multiple pumps or fuel stations, check the vehicle owner’s manual or have the vehicle inspected.

When to get help

Contact station staff when the dispenser or kiosk is not operating normally, when a transaction needs to be found or corrected, or when the issue involves station-owned equipment. Contact your bank or card issuer for authorization decisions and account-specific payment problems. For EV charging, use the operator support channel shown on the charger. For immediate danger, follow emergency instructions rather than troubleshooting the equipment yourself.
