Public EV Charger Session Won’t Start
General troubleshooting for payment, connector, authorization and charging-session failures at public chargers located at or near fueling sites.
Steps to try
Confirm that the connector is the correct type for the vehicle and is fully seated according to the charger instructions.
Read the charger screen for the actual failure message. Common categories include payment, authorization, connector lock, network communication, or vehicle-readiness issues.
Try the station’s approved payment method or app only as instructed by the charger. Do not repeatedly start multiple paid sessions if the first session status is uncertain.
If the vehicle shows that it is not ready to charge, check the vehicle’s own charging settings and make sure the vehicle is in the required state for the session.
Use the charger’s support number or station attendant when the terminal shows a service contact. Provide the charger ID and time; do not provide your account password or payment security code.
If a charge appears pending but no energy was delivered, keep the session receipt and follow the operator’s refund or transaction support process.
When to get help
Contact station staff when the dispenser or kiosk is not operating normally, when a transaction needs to be found or corrected, or when the issue involves station-owned equipment. Contact your bank or card issuer for authorization decisions and account-specific payment problems. For EV charging, use the operator support channel shown on the charger. For immediate danger, follow emergency instructions rather than troubleshooting the equipment yourself.
Reference note
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center lists common public charging connector types and explains that connector compatibility depends on the vehicle and charging equipment. DOE EV charging overview.
