Card Payment Declined at a Gas Station
A safe sequence for dealing with a declined debit or credit card at the pump or register.
Steps to try
Read the exact terminal message. A generic decline, a PIN error, a ZIP-code mismatch, or a request to see the attendant can require different next steps.
Check that the card is active and has not expired. If you are using a debit card, follow the terminal’s instructions for PIN or credit selection.
If prompted for billing ZIP code, enter the ZIP code associated with the card’s billing address—not the station’s ZIP code.
Try the card once more if the terminal allows it. Avoid repeated attempts if your bank may treat them as suspicious activity.
Try another legitimate payment method if available. For a cash payment, follow the station’s posted procedure.
If every method tied to one card fails, use your bank or card issuer’s official support channel. The station generally cannot override a bank-side authorization decision.
If the terminal itself is failing for multiple customers, ask the station attendant to check the dispenser.
When to get help
Contact station staff when the dispenser or kiosk is not operating normally, when a transaction needs to be found or corrected, or when the issue involves station-owned equipment. Contact your bank or card issuer for authorization decisions and account-specific payment problems. For EV charging, use the operator support channel shown on the charger. For immediate danger, follow emergency instructions rather than troubleshooting the equipment yourself.
Reference note
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that a merchant authorization is a check with the card issuer and that a technical connection issue can also cause an authorization failure. CFPB explanation.
